La historia de HELLIUM comenzo a inicios del 2004 cuando 5 amigos del colegio decidieron formar una banda para tocar covers de bandas clásicas de heavy metal como Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Manowar, Metallica, etc. En el 2005 la etapa escolar llegó a su fin y casi todos los miembros de la banda decidieron abandonar el país para seguir con sus estudios en el extranjero, dejando a la banda con pocas probabilidades de supervivencia. El bajista original Fabrizio Cafferata tomó el mando y decidió buscar nuevos miembros entre sus amigos, formando así el nuevo HELLIUM.
Sin embargo, esta alineación no duró mucho debido a que la mayoría de sus miembros no estaban interesados en tener una banda seria y tampoco querían componer material propio. Esta situación desembocó en un punto de quiebre en la historia de la banda. Rafael Nuñez tomó el puesto de vocalista poco tiempo después de que la nueva alineación fue fijada. Como el era el miembro de mayor edad, más experimentado y con más nexos dentro de la escena metal peruana, el lideró a la banda desde ese momento en adelante. Luego de tener varios cambios de alineación, ensayos, conciertos y también desacuerdos internos, Cafferata dejó la banda en el 2006 debido a que decidió mudarse permanentemente a España, significando esto que desde este punto en adelante, no quedaron miembros originales de la banda.
Rafael Nuñez junto a los guitarristas Mario Egoavil, Alonso Rodriguez y el entonces nuevo bajista Diego Shigemura comenzaron a componer canciones propias para su demo debut en el 2007. Acordaron grabar 4 canciones en Karma Studios (Lima, Perú) en el transcurso de otoño del 2007 y primavera del 2008. Las sesiones de grabación fueron extenuantes y fueron siendo pospuestas muchas veces debido a la disponibilidad del estudio. Esta situación estresante afectó tremendamente el producto finaly tanto el estudio como la banda no quedaron satisfechos con el, por lo que decidieron re-grabar todas las canciones en otro estudio.
En septiembre del 2009 Gate of Horrors Producciones le ofreció a la banda abrir para TIM RIPPER OWENS, pero en ese entonces HELLIUM no tenía un logo oficial, por lo que improvisaron uno como se ve en el flyer oficial del evento. Con este último show en mente, la banda comenzó a trabajar con renovadas fuerzas junto a el ingeniero de sonido Adolfo "Pito" Gazzo, dueño de Pito Studio. Gazzo actuó de productor y también mezcló y masterizó el demo llamado "Journey into the Hellium". En ese entonces los miembros de la banda eran Nuñez en voz, Rodriguez en guitarra, Shiguemura en bajo y el en ese entonces nuevo guitarrista Diego Chacaliaza. Rodriguez tomó respondabilidad tanto de la guitarra como de la batería como en las grabaciones anteriores.
El proceso de grabación resultó bastante bien y la química entre HELLIUM y la visión de Gazzo de la banda los llevó a grabar 6 canciones (5 originales + 1 cover) en 1 mes entre diciembre del 2009 y enero del 2010. El demo "Journey into the Hellium" fue lanzado y oficialmente tocado en vivo en marzo del 2010. Se pactaron futuros conciertos para promocionar el nuevo material, pero al terminar de tocar en uno de estos shows (abriendo para la banda brasilera de thrash metal VIOLATOR) aparentemente algunos problemas internos llevaron a Rodriguez, Shigemura y Chacaliaza a dejar la banda simultáneamente.
Rafael Nuñez junto al nuevo baterista Oscar Corpancho se reunieron para discutir el futuro de HELLIUM. Era una situación bastante dura, pero decidieron seguir adelante, creer en ellos mismos y en el amor a la música de HELLIUM. Pidieron a algunos amigos de otras bandas peruanas que apoyaran a la banda, evitando así tener que cancelar ni un solo concierto. Poco tiempo después conocieron al guitarrista Nicolás Morales y se dieron cuenta que la química entre los 3 era realmente fuerte, por lo que invitaron a Morales a formar parte de la banda de manera permanente. El nuevo núcleo de HELLIUM se creó.
Nunca fallándole a los conciertos, la banda invitó al guitarrista Christopher Bryson (Aevum) y al bajista Rodolfo Cáceres (ex-Ambush, The Intermission) a unirse a la banda. Aceptaron el reto, pero al final se mantuvieron como músicos de soporte en vivo debido a sus trabajos y responsabilidades con sus respectivas bandas. Necesitando aún más soporte en vivo, HELLIUM convocó también al guitarrista Diego Chacaliaza para apoyar a la banda en la que tocaban antes y al bajista/guitarrista Renato Crovetto (Inferus).
Nuñez, Morales y Corpancho están actualmente pre-produciendo el nuevo EP aún sin nombre que será lanzado al final del 2011/comienzos del 2012. Incluirá 5 canciones originales compuestas por los 3 miembros oficiales de la banda (Nathalie Markoch de HYPNOX está apoyando a la banda como letrista en algunas canciones). Este nuevo material es el resultado de un sonido más sólido y técnico propio de las influencias de la banda como son el Act III de Death Angel, el Persistence of Time de Anthrax o el State of Insurgency de Hexen y sus propias contribuciones personales.
ENGLISH: HELLIUM's story started in early 2004 when 5 highschool friends decided to put together a band to play covers from classic metal bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Manowar, Metallica, etc. Highschool came to and end in 2005 and almost all members decided to leave their hometown to pursue college studies abroad, leaving the band with minimal survival chances. Original bassist Fabrizio Cafferata took charge and decided to look for new members within his friends, becoming the new HELLIUM.
However this line-up didn't last long as the majority of the new members were neither interested in having a serious band nor writing their own material, leading this situation to a breaking point for the band's history. Rafael Nuñez took the vocal duties short after the new line-up was put together. Since he was the oldest member, more experienced and more related with the peruvian metal scene than the rest, he leaded the band from then on. After several line-up changes, rehearsals, live gigs and also internal arguments, Cafferata left de band in 2006 due to his decition to move in to Spain, meaning that from this point on there were no original band members left.
Rafael Nuñez, along with guitarrists Mario Egoavil, Alonso Rodriguez & new bass player Diego Shiguemura started to write original material for their debut demo in 2007. This stressful situation affected tremendously the final product, neither the band nor the sound engineer involved in the process were pleased with the result and decided to re-record every song at another studio.
On september 2009 the band was offered by Gate of Horrors Productions to open for TIM RIPPER OWENS gig, but at the time HELLIUM didn't have a proper logo, so they improvised one as seen it on the official flyer. With this last gig in mind, the band started working with renewed strength along with sound engineer Adolfo "Pito" Gazzo, owner of Pito Studio. Gazzo performed as producer and also mixed and mastered the demo entitled "Journey into the Hellium". At this time HELLIUM's band members were Nuñez on vocals, Rodriguez on guitar, Shiguemura on bass and new guitarrist Diego Chacaliaza. Rodriguez took on both guitar and drums duties, like on previous recordings.
Rafael Nuñez, along with new drummer Oscar Corpancho met to discuss the future of HELLIUM. It was a tough situation, but they decided to carry on, believe in themselves and their love for HELLIUM's music. They asked some friends from other peruvian bands to support the band live, avoiding to cancel a single gig. Shortly they met guitar player Nicolás Morales and found out that the chemistry between them was really strong, so they invited Morales to join the band permanently. The new core of HELLIUM was born.
Never failing to play live, the guys invited 2nd lead guitar player Christopher Bryson (Aevum) and bassist Rodolfo Cáceres (ex-Ambush, The Intermission) to join the band. They accepted the challenge, but at the end they remained as live support musicians due to their day-time jobs and responsabilities with their own bands. Due to the need of musicians to support the band live, HELLIUM also asked 2nd lead guitar player Diego Chacaliaza to support the band he used to play in and also Renato Crovetto (Inferus) to act as live support musicians.
